Originally established in 1867 to serve the needs of
the Polish community, this mission church was once
considered the largest parish in the world. In 1875,
Patrick C. Keely, an award-winning architect from
Brooklyn, designed the current old-world Renaissance
church. Its Romanesque architecture, with white brick
and stone trimmings, took 16 years to complete. Original
plans to build the Kennedy Expressway during the 1950s
called for the demolition of St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish.

Parishioners gathered in thousands to sign petitions in protest until the city finally agreed to move the expressway and build
it approximately one and one half feet from the rectory
building. Poles with roots at the church continue to return to
the parish from all across the Chicago area for baptisms, weddings, and funerals. Now, an entirely new phase is under
way as not only Poles, but Mexicans routinely visit the parish
to return to their roots. The bilingual skills of the parish priests serve the diverse mix of parish membership, and Masses are offered in English, Spanish, and Polish.
